[the hotel isn't very big, but Kaito does manage to flag Heather down while he's on his way back to his room. he makes sure there isn't anyone listening, before he quirks an eyebrow at her]

Lawbringer, huh?

[he finds this funny for reasons he won't say aloud]

Looks like you can read after all.

[ in fact, kaito will see that heather's whip is with her — it's sitting in her lap. being in a wheelchair had its advantages — she could have it with her all the time for now. ]

What? Did you think I couldn't, or something?

[his gaze is drawn to her whip, but only for a few seconds before he looks up at her again. she'll be able to see that his handgun is at his side and, if she encounters him at any point from this moment onward, she'll realize he literally never goes anywhere without it]

I dunno, you're full of surprises now. Nothing would shock me coming from you.

[ you know, the whole gun thing. Heather and kaito have something in common though — they always have their weapons. even when heather isn't wheelchair-bound, she's always got the whip tied to her pants. ]

You know, I thought you were bad news for a while. With all those tidbits you kept throwing out in trials.

[he's about to reply with another snarky comment, but what she says takes him off guard]

-- wait, seriously?

Did you think I was suspicious 'cause I knew too much, or. . . something?

[ungodly]

Yeah, sorta. Not like, a heavy suspicion. Just a latent one, y'know? Like.. you definitely seem like you've been putting your finger in everyone's pie.

[ but things were good now. kaito had.. proved himself. he put himself in a relatively vulnerable situation, which was proof enough for her. ]

You realize what this means now, right? People're gonna look to you in trials. Because we all know you're a neutral party. Hope you're ready for responsibility like that.

[he looks. . . honest? pretty taken aback by that. Kaito had always been a lone wolf. the kind of person who did his own thing, regardless of what other people thought. he wasn't a leader, he wasn't a detective, he was just a thief]

[but at the same time. . . he's been determined to fight his stupid ritual from day one, and that determination, that spark of defiance is something he's worn at every trial. so his surprise fades away pretty quickly, and he manages to pull up a tired smile]

I dunno if I am, but I guess that's kinda. . . irrelevant, right?

[heh]

All I've ever wanted to do is solve these stupid murders. Ever since Hana, I've been. . . I dunno. Trying as hard as I can to make sure we get the right guy. And if that involves making myself vulnerable by announcing to the public what sort of information I have, then so be it.
